Initial goals
My biggest goal for A. is to build up her confidence as a reader. To accomplish this there are two main areas that I would like to work on. The first of these is decoding skills especially for multi-syllabic words. Additionally, I would like to work on broadening her vocabulary through discussion of new terminology in the text and using context clues to uncover the meaning of a word. I hope work in these areas will improve her overall comprehension as well as her fluency and rate when reading.
Progress Toward Goals and Future goals
My biggest goal for A. was to build up her confidence as a reader. While this confidence was not clearly demonstrated in her initial reaction to assessment, throughout tutoring sessions I have seen A. become more confident and independent in her approach to reading. During tutoring I initially had two main goals that I felt would help make her a more confident reader when she achieved them. The first of these is decoding skills especially for multi-syllabic words. While she still omitted some multi-syllabic words when reading, she makes more attempts at multi-syllabic words and appeals much less frequently. The next step for this goal, is to broaden the decoding strategies that A. uses independently. Currently, she uses 2 or 3 strategies which have helped her in her reading, but she would benefit from a broader selection of strategies and greater automaticity in their application. Additionally, I wanted to work on her comprehension by encouraging her to re-read and make sure what she read made sense. She has made progress toward this goal, but she is inconsistent in her monitoring for meaning especially when her rate increases. Therefore, I would like to see her work on consistently applying this skill when reading.
